PSP is GO! GO! GO! Sony announces three new services to turn PSP into the ultimate handheld entertainment device.

During its big Games Convention conference, Sony announced three new services to turn European PlayStation Portables into a mobile video phone, GPS system and downloadable TV device.

First up, we'll take a look at Go! Messenger, which offers voice and video calls over wi-fi. Sony has struck a deal with phone company BT to offer this service across Europe and it's expected to roll out next January as part of a firmware update. What's more, by using the software alongside the previously released Go! Camera you can make video calls to other Messenger users or send video messages.

Also announced was the Go! Explore utility, which turns the PSP into a portable GPS system that can be used when travelling by car or on foot. By using a fairly small peripheral that slots into the mini-USB port on top of the system, you can plan routes and then take 3D fly-throughs them. The 3D maps show places of interest - including famous sights or recognisable locations - speed cameras and local services, such as restaurants. Go! Explore is launching next February and will be free to use, although we're not sure how much the GPS add-on is going to cost.

Finally, Sony revealed more details about its deal with SKY to offer a video download service in the UK. Although it was originally back in July by SKY, Sony Europe president David Reeves explained that the broadcasting company is planning to make movies, sports, TV shows and music available on either a pay-per-view basis or through subscriptions to particular channels.

Reeves was also keen to stamp out rumours that SKY was also looking to offer something similar on Nintendo DS and said it "will not be available on any other handheld or mobile device". So there you go Nintendo. Currently the deal with SKY only covers the UK but Sony is in talks with a provider in France and also considering video downloads for Germany and Spain too.
